The City of Olympia issued the following announcement on Mar. 2.

The City of Olympia stands with the democracies of the world in condemnation of the unprovoked attack and invasion of Ukraine. Our hearts break for the suffering, the destruction and deprivation the Russian attack is bringing to the Ukrainian people.  At the same time, we are awed by their bravery, their indomitable spirit, and their unflinching resolve to fight for their independence.

The Ukrainian people remind us, as Olympians, that the power to determine for ourselves how we live and who our leaders are is the right of all people, and the preservation of the democracy that secures that right is an obligation and worth fighting for.

We urge the international community to continue to impose severe sanctions on Russia for its needless act of aggression against Ukraine and against the peace and security of the world.

Until there is peace in Ukraine.
