Creighton Women's Basketball head coach Jim Flanery and the 2021-22 Bluejay squad were honored by the Omaha Sports Commission with OSCAs (Omaha Sports Commission Award) during the fourth annual award ceremony in late May.
Flanery was named the 2021-22 Male Coach of the Year, while the Women's Basketball team earned 2021-22 Team of the Year. Earning their eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament this season, the Bluejays took the program to new heights with a run that reached the Elite Eight. Along the way Creighton defeated Colorado (84-74) in the opening round, then bested No. 8 Iowa (64-62) to advance to the Sweet 16 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Creighton's magical run continued as the Bluejays bested No. 10 Iowa State (76-68) before eventually falling to the NCAA Champion South Carolina in the Elite Eight.
Playing one of the most entertaining styles of basketball, the 2021-22 Women's Team closed the season as the NCAA leaders in Assists (668), Assist-to-Turnover Ratio (1.59) and Assists per game (20.2).
Other award winners honored by the Omaha Sports Commission were Garrett Grice (Bellevue East) and top women's basketball prospect Britt Prince (Elkhorn North) with athlete of the year honors. Katie Tarman (Papillion-La Vista South) earned the female coach of the year, while Stu Pospisil (Omaha World-Herald) was named the Steve Pivovar Sports Media Person of the Year. Union Omaha's 2021 USL League One championship-game win the sports moment of the year.
Minnesota Vikings lineman Harrison Phillips (a Millard West graduate) and his Playmakers foundation received the Dr. Jack Lewis Award.
Kimera Bartee, a late former Bluejay as well as Fred Hare, Joanne Kappas and the undefeated 2003 Millard North football team were also inducted into the Omaha Sports Commission Hall of Fame.
