The Story of an (Almost) Sinkhole

Newsrelease

Yesterday morning, a resident was traveling down Angleside Road when he noticed a hole in the ground.

Big whoop, right? Some of us wouldn't have even noticed. But this resident stopped to take a closer look and stuck a tape measure into it. This hole was over a foot deep! He took a couple photos (Photos 1 and 2) and uploaded them to the city's app with a brief description and a location.

Our Streets Department received the report and when they saw the resident's photos, knew they needed to check it out right away. Photo 3? That's what was visible of a 6 foot long digging bar once it was put in the hole. Additionally, the alligator cracking visible in these photos is a common sign that something's going on under the road that could lead to a gnarly pothole, sinkhole, or worse.

Thankfully, our crews were able to close Angleside, complete a sinkhole investigation, and fix the problem in just an afternoon (saving money and protecting an underrated piece of our infrastructure, our streets).

You too can let us know about potholes on public roads, or any number of non-emergency issues you see around Shelton! The city app is available on both the Apple and Google Play stores, or issues can be reported online at webrai.mycivicapps.com/c4f9d286db4e456fffe2f26d832dec8e
