After meeting for nearly a year and a half, Lewis County’s Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Commission officially started work on a countywide approach to tourism.
“The goal of this group is to identify current challenges and future opportunities associated with recreation and tourism in Lewis County,” Discover Lewis County Director Tamara Hayes said, The Daily Chronicle reported in November. “The county has to adopt it, otherwise it has no real value.”
The unified approach to a tourism strategy should enable the county to pursue grants for parks, she said.
At this point, they are studying old plans like the White Pass Scenic Byway long-term plan.
Hayes said dozens of participants, including legislators, nonprofit and private representatives, discussed rebranding Southwest Washington as a tourism destination during the 2018 Outdoor Recreation & Tourism Summit.
“We’ve become a Mecca for people wanting to get out of the cities and recreate here in our beautiful county,” Lewis County Commissioner Edna Fund said, The Daily Chronicle reported.
