The University of Puget Sound in Tacoma has announced students will not be returning to campus for the fall semester.

Remote classes will begin Monday, Aug. 31, instead, the News Tribune reported

The university made the decision as the number of cases in Pierce County continues to rise.

Some students will be able to access limited campus housing, but priority will be given to students who "experience housing or food insecurity; are unable to effectively participate in remote learning from their homes, even with accommodations; or have a compelling academic or cocurricular reason to be on campus, such as students who need access to specialized facilities, equipment, or other resources for their academic work,” the News Tribune reported.

Tuition cost will also be reduced to the level of Fall 2019 tuition, a $1,025 reduction. The school will offer a comparable reduction for graduate students.

Other area schools are also having to make the difficult decision about whether or not to bring students back to campus in a few short weeks. Pacific Lutheran University has provided its students with an online option, the News Tribune reported. University of Washington Tacoma will be majority online, and Tacoma Community College also plans to have most of its curriculum online with some on-campus instruction.
