Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland has used her social media platform to address the ongoing government shutdown and extend greetings to the Jewish community during Yom Kippur.

On October 1, 2025, Strickland stated: “Stop lying. Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House. They fully own 100% of the shutdown.” On October 2, she reiterated her stance by addressing Speaker Johnson directly: “.@SpeakerJohnson, you are the Speaker of the House. Republicans control everything. This Republican Shutdown is on YOU.”

In a separate post earlier that day, Strickland marked Yom Kippur with a message for Jewish Americans: “This #YomKippur, I wish our Jewish community across the nation an easy and meaningful fast. G’Mar Chatima Tova!” (October 2, 2025).

Strickland’s comments come amid a federal government shutdown in which Republican lawmakers hold majorities in both chambers of Congress and occupy the presidency. The statements emphasize her attribution of responsibility for the shutdown to Republican leadership.

Marilyn Strickland was elected as a Republican to represent North Carolina’s 28th House district in 2017, succeeding James Langdon, Jr., though she now serves in Congress.
