Evergreen’s Board of Trustees Considers Presidential Stability to Advance College’s Initiatives

The Evergreen State College Board of Trustees directed board chair Karen Fraser to explore an extension for interim president Dr. John Carmichael’s contract. Carmichael’s current contract is through June 2023 and he has served as interim president since June 2021.

“The college has a lot of major initiatives underway,” said Fraser. She went on to say that the college will do a better job of attracting candidates if some of these initiatives are further along. Specifically, Fraser noted the need to launch a national search for a permanent provost, building out Evergreen’s new professional studies offerings, continuing with enrollment efforts, and provisions to the faculty union contract.

The chair will return to the board with a recommended course of action, giving due consideration to community feedback.
